The 15 Best Pies In Melbourne

What’s an afternoon at the footy (be it AFL, rugby or soccer) without a meat pie at half time? And is there anything better to warm the cockles on a cold night than the comfort of a delicious hot pie?

Aussies are well known for their love of this humble food and Melbourne is a city that caters for every kind of pie lover, from the Four ‘n Twenty advocate to the gourmet connoisseur.

In Melbourne every day is #pieday.

Melbourne’s pastry chefs do not neglect their craft or take it for granted. There’s plenty of imagination around and feats of baking mastery on display (the pastry can never be soggy – it must be flaky, crispy and have structural integrity).

Choose your pie shop wisely and you’ll be in awe of the variety of beautifully constructed and flavoured pies that are on offer within this city.

A pie is the perfect choice to counter hunger during a sporting event (the MCG and Marvel Stadium both offer gourmet pie options!) and will feed a ravenous family with piping-hot mouthfuls of flaky goodness.

The good ‘ol Aussie Pie is one of my favourite comfort foods. Is there anything better?

And let’s not forget that a good pie remains the perfect hand-held meal. You get to walk, talk and indulge simultaneously. What more could you want?!

The Pie Shop

Location: 75 Nicholson St, Brunswick East, VIC 3057 Ph: 0423 978 333
Opening Hours: Mon-Sat 10am-2.30pm ([email protected])

We’re revisiting this article (and our recommended pie haunts in Melbourne) after hearing the news that one of our all-time favourite pie stores, the appropriately named The Pie Shop in Brunswick has sadly closed its doors.

Founded by chef (and cookbook author) Matt Wilkinson, The Pie Shop has been filling neighbourhood bellies with acclaimed pies since 2018, when it opened next door to Matt’s celebrated cafe, Pope Joan (77 Nicholson Street).

At The Pie Shop expect to discover trays of homemade savoury pies with curious names – for breakfast ask for an Uncle Pete (jalapeño baked beans, egg and cheese) – and with fillings as varied as spaghetti bolognese (The Bruce), black pepper beef and cheese (The Tomo), chunky beef (The Allen), cauliflower cheese and potato (The Shazza), and butter chicken and rice (The Norma).

There’s also a sublime free-range pig sausage roll (The Graham), and recommended sweet slices (blackberry and ginger crumble; honey and buttermilk; apple and salted caramel).

Editor’s Note: Unfortunately, The Pie Shop is now no longer operating – these days you’ll find Matt in the spacious surronds of the Montalto Winery on the Mornington Peninsula (in his role as Culinary Director) and experimenting with spices, seasonings and rubs for Street BBQ.

Johnny Ripe Main Ridge by The Epicurean Group

Location: 284 Main Creek Rd, Main Ridge, VIC 3928 Ph: (03) 59896686

Ok, so you could argue that Johnny Ripe Main Ridge isn’t technically in Melbourne. However, you definitely can’t argue that their artisan pies aren’t worth the trip to the Mornington Peninsula. Alternatively, the fame of Johnny Ripe pies is such that they are now stocked in an array of gourmet food stores across both Melbourne and regional Victoria.

So what about those famous pies?

Well, Johnny Ripe all started with the humble apple pie – though admittedly a very good one made with hand-peeled apples from their own orchard and buttery short pastry. From there, things have developed and now the Johnny Ripe bakery makes an assortment of both sweet and savoury pies. One of our go-tos is their fabulous Beef and Rosemary Pie, though a friend of ours is addicted to their Fruit Mince Pies which hit the shelves over the festive period.

Cambodian-born Chan and Ryan Khun understand that any great pie starts with good pastry. At Country Cob Bakery they use not one, but 2 types in their baked goods. The base is a sturdy shortcrust, whilst the toping is a layer puff.

And then there’s the fillings. Whilst their Meat Pie has been heralded as the best in the land for 3 years running, that’s not their only coveted bake. Their Vegetarian Pasty, Fruit Tart and Curry Scallop Pie are also prized, and that’s not all. Even their Vanilla Slice gets rave reviews.

When we last visited the Chadstone Country Cob Bakery, we scoffed one of the legendary Meat Pies and then went in for a Caramelised Pork and Cracked Pepper. Wow. Hunks of pork in a flavoursome gravy, spiked with Sichuan Peppercorns. It was a real delight to eat.

No wonder this is rated amongst the best pies in Melbourne.
